Dean Salakas, co-owner of party-goods retailer The Party People, has won a small business competition on Vero’s online Success Hub platform, earning a $20,000 grant.

Mr Salakas’s entry received the most votes from the public and has also won a working lunch with Tristan White, a business owner whose company The Physio Co was ranked first in Business Review Weekly’s top-50 places to work in Australia in 2014.

The Party People was started by Mrs Mala Salakas and her father Mr Peter Nikolas as a single shop in Sydney’s San Souci in 1985.

In 2007, Mrs Salakas’s sons Dean and Peter purchased the business from their mother and grandfather.

The brothers have since grown the business to employ more than 40 people, open the largest party-goods store in the country, and operate the most-visited party-goods website in Australia.

“It was a great thrill to win this competition and we’re very excited to meet Tristan and learn from his experiences. We ran a Facebook campaign to encourage people to vote for us, and we had a fantastic response,” said Mr Salakas.

“The huge amount of support we received from people voting for us was very humbling. So many people shared our story with their friends and told them to vote for us – we actually got a lot out of just being in the competition.

“As a small business, we don’t necessarily see ourselves as a success story yet. We feel like we are just getting started and are always looking at what’s next in store for the business.

“But when your customers give you such great feedback, you realise that you are achieving success.”

The Party People’s broker, Mr James Fletcher, director of Malton Road Advisory, said the brothers’ passion for the business was the secret to their success.

“Dean takes every opportunity to promote the business, whether it’s through Facebook video campaigns, the media, or on The Shark Tank TV show. Their commitment and enthusiasm is helping them to achieve great things,” Mr Fletcher said.

The competition was held in conjunction with the launch of Vero’s Success Hub and accompanying advertising campaign in early August.

The Success Hub is an online repository where SMEs can read success stories, obtain hints for achieving success and use the Vero ‘Success Meter’. This interactive tool provides users with a ‘Success Profile’ and measures them against similar businesses.
